DO YOU SEE ORANGE?

Yeah, I've seen orange, but what is this all about?

The goal of the ORPHAN campaign is to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic in Africa and promote action. One out of every 20 children in sub-saharan Africa is orphaned by AIDS - 12 million children - and to represent this, 1 out of every 20 students on campus were wearing orange ORPHAN T-shirts on Tuesday April 8. However, in 8 years, if we do nothing, 1 out of 10 children will be orphaned by AIDS - on Friday April 11th we represented this by 1 out of 10 students wearing the orange ORPHAN t-shirts. We are not just raising awareness though - we are offering you the opportunity to make a difference. On Tuesday, April 8th we had an opportunity fair on Library Mall to challenge you to take action. However, that has passed but you can still make a difference by checking out oppportunities to help presented on this website!!!

This campaign, called "Do you see orange?" is part of a movement called Acting on AIDS, whose goal is to create awareness and promote activism on the global AIDS pandemic at colleges and universities across the nation. Besides the T-shirt campaign, there will be and were many other events surrounding this, as you will find on this page. Check it out, and see how YOU can help!

"Acting on AIDS mobilizes students to action, not cynicism."
"Our message is one of hope, not despair about the state of AIDS and brokenness in the world."
"Our focus is to care for the least of these—the millions of widows and orphans who have been devastated by AIDS and are living in desperate poverty."
"Together, our unified voices will change our communities, then our society and ultimately the world."

What happened?

Tuesday April 8 & Friday April 11 - We wore our T-shirts!!!!
We also had two rallies, one on Tuesday at library mall and one on Friday at Bascom Hill. We had an opportunity fair on Tuesday to challenge students to Act on AIDS and make a difference. Some of these opportunities were: AIDS project (students selling earrings), study abroad, 40/40, AIDS focused trip to South Africa, World Vision - 6,000 challenge and child sponsorship, Engineers without Borders, Peace Corps, AIDS Network - Madison, Compassion child sponsorship and ONE campaign.

Bwalya Melu from Zambia spoke Friday night. When talking about AIDS and Africa, for Bwalya Melu it's personal...AIDS took the lives of three of his brothers and their wives. We heard his intimate perspective of this crisis and discovered there truly is hope! READ MORE...

What is going on right now?

Friday April 11 - Monday April 14  -  The AIDS Experience

An interactive walk-through experience...step right into the heart of Africa, into the life of a child affected by AIDS. At Blackhawk church on Mineral Point Rd. Get your tickets at the website - www.worldvisionexperience.org. If there are no times left on the website, you might still be able to get in by showing up and waiting. I HIGHLY recommend this - it is incredible, well done, impacting - everyone should experience this. Africa becomes more than a continent, but a face - a story - a life. If at all possible, GO!!!!!!!!!!
